Introduction

This guidance incorporates the recommendations in Inherited Clinical Guideline B published by the Institute in April 2001

The following guidance is evidence based. The recommendations in this document are derived from two clinical guidelines, Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment and Prevention and Clinical Practice Guideline for Pressure-relieving Devices: the Use of Pressure-relieving Devices (Beds, Mattresses and Overlays) for the Prevention of Pressure Ulcers in Primary and Secondary Care (see Section 5), which use different grading schemes. In the guideline on pressure ulcer risk assessment and prevention, evidence grading was 1, 2 and 3; in the guideline on pressure-relieving devices, recommendations were graded A, B, C and D. The gradings are available in the NICE guideline and are not shown in this web version.

The guideline on pressure ulcer risk assessment and prevention was published in 2001[1]. Its recommendations have been incorporated into this document, but the evidence used to develop it was not reviewed or updated during the development of the guideline on pressure-relieving devices.
